The "Doomsday" Glacier the Size of Great Britain Threatens the Planet

The Thwaites Glacier, known as the "Doomsday Glacier," has begun actively shifting, which threatens shipping, the "revival" of ancient bacteria, and rising global sea levels. The risks were explained by a member of the Russian Geographical Society, oceanologist Anatoly Tavrichesky, in an interview with aif.ru.

According to the scientist, it is necessary to constantly monitor the movements of the glacier, which has an area comparable to the territory of Great Britain, and inform seafarers of its position to avoid catastrophe.

The expert noted that there are risks that the glacier will enter a warm equatorial current and gradually melt. Tavrichesky emphasized that this poses a serious danger to humanity and the waters of the World Ocean.

"There may also be some organisms in a frozen state, gradually they will thaw, and they may spread in the sea," warned the oceanologist.

According to Western scientists' forecasts, if the "Doomsday Glacier" completely melts, the world ocean level may rise by 60 cm. In the worst case, this figure could be up to 3-5 meters, which would trigger the melting of other glaciers and a climate catastrophe. However, Tavrichesky reassured that this will not happen soon, but urged to carefully monitor the glacier's movements and its condition.
