Consuming more than one can of soda per day can significantly increase the risk of developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. This conclusion was reached by scientists from Suzhou University (China). The results of their long-term study were presented at the international conference United European Gastroenterology Week 2025 (UEG).

Scientists analyzed health and diet data from more than 100 thousand people from the UK Biobank database. Participants were observed over a period of ten years. None of the subjects had liver pathologies in their medical history at the start of the study.

It turned out that those who drank more than 250 ml of carbonated beverages daily had a significantly higher risk of developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease than those who drank them rarely or did not consume them at all.

The comparative effect of regular and diet soda turned out to be unexpected. With moderate consumption, the risk level was approximately the same. However, with high consumption volume, the risk of disease among diet beverage enthusiasts turned out to be even higher: 60% versus 50% for those who drank regular soda.

Additionally, researchers recorded a connection between the consumption of both types of beverages and an increased risk of premature death from liver diseases associated with fat accumulation in the organ's tissues.
