"From 1978 to 1995, the Caspian Sea level was rising. At that time, Azerbaijan's economy suffered damage of 2 billion dollars".

This was reported by Professor Amir Aliyev, head of the Caspian Sea department at the Institute of Geography named after Hasan Aliyev of the Ministry of Science and Education, in an interview with BAKU.WS.

He noted that according to forecasts, the process of water recession in the Caspian Sea will continue for the next 10-15 years. During these years, the sea level will decrease. Then, approximately between 2040-2050, an increase will be observed again:

"It has been established that over the past 4000 years, the Caspian level decreases for approximately 200-220 years, and rises for the same amount of time. The last highest level was recorded in 1805. Since that day, the water level has been decreasing. Periodically, minor increases are observed, but overall the water level is falling."

According to the professor, the recession of the Caspian waters has both ecological and economic consequences.

"The special impact is mainly manifested in shipping. Previously, ports were closer, now due to the sea's recession, ships cannot approach the port. A similar situation exists in the fishing industry. From 1978 to 1995, the Caspian level was rising. At that time, Azerbaijan's economy suffered damage of 2 billion dollars. We have places where the sea has receded by 100, 200, 500 meters, even up to a kilometer," emphasized the department head.
