A monochrome painting by French artist Yves Klein was sold at Christie's London auction for 21.4 million dollars (approximately 33.6 million manats).

As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Comments.ua, the work titled "California," created in 1961, was put up for auction for the first time and immediately attracted interest from collectors around the world.

The painting is a solid blue canvas measuring almost two by four meters.

It was created using the artist's signature ultramarine pigment, patented by the artist under the name International Klein Blue. This shade became a distinctive feature of his work and the embodiment of his "pure color" philosophy.

As Klein himself noted, each of his monochrome works is unique because it "possesses its own essence and atmosphere." Christie's emphasized that "California" is among the artist's most important works, reflecting his transition from material form to the idea of infinity.

The name of the buyer has not been disclosed.
