The United States did not attack one of Iran's key nuclear facilities in Isfahan using the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bunker-buster bomb, as the facility is located too deep underground, and the use of this weapon, according to military assessment, would have been ineffective.

According to CNN, this was stated by Air Force Lieutenant General Dan Kane, who heads the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His comment came on June 26 during a closed briefing for members of the US Congress. The meeting was also attended by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe.

The Isfahan Nuclear Research Center is considered the largest in Iran. It includes three Chinese research reactors and is located southeast of the city of the same name. According to the US and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), significant stocks of enriched uranium were previously stored here in underground storage facilities.

During the night attack on June 22, the US struck ground facilities near Isfahan with Tomahawk cruise missiles launched from a submarine. At the same time, more than a dozen MOP bombs were dropped on nuclear facilities in Fordow and Natanz from American B-2 strategic bombers.
