Bashar al-Assad has been sentenced to death in absentia

A Syrian court found former President Bashar al-Assad guilty of crimes against humanity and issued a death sentence in absentia.

This was reported by the Syrian agency SANA.

No other details were provided.

Meanwhile, as reported by the Al-Hadath television channel, in addition to him, the court found his brother Maher and his cousin Atef Najib guilty of deliberate murder and torture.

"The court also found Maher al-Assad guilty of deliberate murder, torture, and incitement and sentenced him to death," the television channel noted.

Atef Najib, who headed the political security division in Daraa province under Assad, was also sentenced to death.

It should be noted that Bashar al-Assad and his family received asylum in Russia in December 2024 following the fall of his regime in Syria during an armed overthrow.
