Scientists have explained which coffee is the healthiest for a diet
Black coffee and espresso remain among the most popular coffee drinks, however they differ significantly in composition and concentration of beneficial substances. Research shows that when comparing equal portions, espresso contains more caffeine and antioxidants.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Verywellhealth, studies indicate that espresso has higher antioxidant activity per serving. In particular, it contains almost twice as many polyphenols as most other types of coffee. Espresso's antioxidants neutralize free radicals more effectively, however it's important to consider that a standard serving is only 30 ml.
At the same time, people rarely drink 30 ml of black coffee, whereas a cup of classic brewed coffee often amounts to 240 ml. Therefore, the difference in concentration of substances is more often related to the small volume of espresso, rather than the characteristics of the drink itself. If comparing 30 ml and 240 ml, a large cup of black coffee contains higher levels of caffeine and antioxidants.
What is black coffee?
Black coffee is prepared by brewing ground coffee beans in hot water. It is characterized by its dark color, rich aroma, and slight bitterness.
What is espresso?
Espresso is obtained by forcing hot water under high pressure through finely ground roasted beans. This brewing method creates a concentrated drink with a pronounced taste, dense aroma, and characteristic creamy foam.
Nutritional value: black coffee vs espresso
A cup of black coffee (240 ml) contains about 96 mg of caffeine, while a serving of espresso has approximately 63 mg.
If comparing 30 ml of each drink:
-
calories: less than 1 / 2.5
-
caffeine: 12 mg / 63 mg
-
polyphenols: 20–40 mg / 60–90 mg
Experts remind that it's safe for adults to consume up to 400 mg of caffeine per day - that's approximately 2-3 cups of the beverage at 350 ml each. Expectant mothers are recommended to limit themselves to 200 mg of caffeine per day.
It is noted that caffeine is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream - mainly through the stomach and oral cavity. Unlike other substances, the liver has almost no effect on its metabolism.
