According to a statement by Denis Borozdenko, a junior researcher in the department of medical chemistry and toxicology and an assistant at the Department of Pharmacology at Pirogov University, ordinary table mineral water, although suitable for daily consumption by healthy people, may pose a danger to patients with hypertension and kidney diseases.

The specialist notes that all mineral waters are classified into three categories depending on their salt content: table water (up to 1 g/l), medicinal-table water (1-10 g/l), and medicinal water (more than 10 g/l).

"Regular table mineral water can be consumed daily (about a liter per day for an adult), as the salt content in it is less than the body's daily requirement. In this case, the water will help prevent diseases such as osteoporosis (source of calcium), anemia (source of iron), improve gastrointestinal motility (magnesium, chlorides), and neuroses (magnesium). But for people with chronic diseases, such as hypertension or kidney disease, even such mineral water can cause deterioration in health due to an additional source of sodium, which can increase blood pressure, and calcium ions can contribute to the formation of kidney stones. Therefore, to avoid harming your health, be sure to consult with a doctor to choose the mineral water that is right for you," emphasized Borozdenko.

The expert also noted that the optimal composition of mineral water from a medical point of view depends on the specific needs of the body and health condition.

"For example, in summer, the body loses more salts with sweat, so in hot weather it is better to prefer medicinal-table mineral water with higher mineralization. The same water is suitable during intensive sports training," concluded the specialist.
