Ophthalmologists raise alarm: popular procedure may cause vision loss
This is interesting 37

In the USA, a new eye color change procedure is rapidly gaining popularity, despite serious concerns from specialists. The country's leading ophthalmologists warn that the pursuit of aesthetic effect may result in irreversible health consequences.

The growing demand for cosmetic keratopigmentation has caused serious concern in the medical community. Experts in the field of ophthalmology insist that such an operation involves excessive risks and should not be available to the general public without strict limitations.

The cosmetic keratopigmentation procedure outwardly resembles the popular LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) surgery – it is also performed quickly, painlessly, and is subject to further correction. However, the financial aspect differs significantly – the cost of changing eye color substantially exceeds the price of standard ophthalmological interventions.

The professional community of ophthalmologists expresses concern that the available scientific research on eye color change is based on a limited sample of patients and short-term observation periods. This creates an information vacuum regarding the long-term consequences of such intervention.

In January 2024, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) issued an official warning that artificial iris implantation and cosmetic keratopigmentation carry high risks of complications, up to complete vision loss. Specialists emphasize that changing eye color can provoke inflammatory processes or damage to the cornea. There is also a danger of corneal scarring due to infectious complications. Of particular concern is the possibility of dye migration through the eye channels, which potentially threatens other eye structures.

The vast majority of ophthalmologists recommend that those who dream of changing their eye color pay attention to a safer alternative – colored contact lenses. This option is not only significantly more affordable in price but also presents minimal threat to vision when usage rules are followed.
