Named the most densely populated city on Earth
Indonesian capital Jakarta has become the most populous city on the planet, overtaking Tokyo. This is reported by The Guardian with reference to a new report from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, according to BAKU.WS.
According to the organization, about 42 million people currently live in Jakarta. The capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka, ranks second with 37 million, and Japanese Tokyo is third with 33 million residents.
The UN updated its counting methodology to more accurately reflect the rapid urbanization that is accelerating the growth of megacities.
According to the report, nine of the ten most populous cities in the world are located in Asia. The list includes: Jakarta, Dhaka, Tokyo, New Delhi, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Cairo, Manila, Kolkata, and Seoul.
It is also noted that the number of megacities - cities with populations over 10 million - has grown from 8 in 1975 to 33 in 2025. According to forecasts, by 2050, large cities will accommodate two-thirds of the world's population growth, while the remaining part will be in small cities.
