There are gender differences in memory function during aging. Thus, hormonal changes during aging can impair memory and attention in women, psychiatrist Maria Shtan told "Gazeta.Ru".

"Gender differences in cognitive functions during healthy aging have been studied in several research studies. Some results confirmed versions of the original gender differences in cognitive functions, as well as gender differences in cognitive changes during aging," noted the doctor.

According to her, at the beginning of the study, women outperformed men on verbal thinking tests, including verbal memory and speech fluency.

"Men demonstrated superior spatial thinking compared to women at the beginning of the study and higher rates of further cognitive decline in terms of psychomotor speed with increasing age. Endocrine changes accompanying aging may also contribute to age-related cognitive decline. In women, the production of estrogen and progesterone significantly decreases with reproductive aging, leading to impaired concentration and memory," added the doctor.
