Russia plans to tighten legislation in the field of combating fictitious marriages of foreign citizens.

As BAKU.WS reports with reference to the Russian press, the corresponding bill has already been submitted for consideration to the State Duma.

According to the explanatory note to the document, when deciding on the administrative expulsion of a foreign citizen from the Russian Federation, not only formal marriage certificates will be taken into account. Now, convincing evidence of permanent cohabitation of spouses and maintaining a common household throughout the entire period of marital relations will be required.

However, the government in its conclusion noted that the proposed bill requires significant revision. In particular, the document lacks a clear mechanism for establishing the fact of cohabitation of spouses. In addition, it does not take into account situations where separate living and household management may be caused by objective circumstances - such as a pandemic, military conflicts, or peculiarities of work activities, for example, shift work.
