What prompted Turkey to create the "Steel Dome" air defense system?
In the latest edition of the "Military Chronicle" section on Baku TV, the capabilities and strategic importance of the multi-level air defense system "Steel Dome" developed by the Turkish defense industry to protect the country's airspace are discussed.
According to the information, the identified shortcomings in the Israeli "Iron Dome" system have put on the agenda a more rapid development of the American "Golden Dome" project and the Turkish "Steel Dome" complex.
It is noted that Turkey completed an important stage in the program launched in August 2024, transferring the first package of the "Sky Dome" complex worth $460 million, including 47 elements, to the army on August 27. It was presented at the ASELSAN facility in Gölbaşı.
The "Steel Dome" is a multi-level protective architecture covering low, medium, and high altitudes, equipped with the HAKİM control system based on artificial intelligence technologies. The first level of defense is provided by ALKA, İHTAR, Şahin, Alp, Gökberk complexes, as well as portable SUNGUR systems designed to combat drones and cruise missiles. Defense at medium and long distances is carried out using HİSAR-A, HİSAR-O and SİPER complexes. The range of SİPER-1 is 100 km, and SİPER-2 is more than 150 km.
It is emphasized that other national systems, such as KORKUT, PUHU, REDET, and EJDERHA, also play an important role in the implementation of the project.
