The course set by Heydar Aliyev

On May 10, we celebrate the birthday of Heydar Aliyev - the national leader of the Azerbaijani people. On this day, we gratefully remember the man who, at the most dramatic moment in history, managed to hold the country back from the abyss and transform fragile independence into a solid, unshakable foundation of statehood, writes the newspaper "Kaspiy".

The early 1990s became a time of the most severe trials for Azerbaijan. The country, having barely regained its independence, found itself in a whirlpool of economic collapse, political chaos, the Karabakh war, and a profound social crisis. Hundreds of thousands of refugees, shattered destinies, anxiety about tomorrow. It seemed that statehood itself was bursting at the seams.

It was then that the people turned to Heydar Aliyev. His return in 1993 was not merely a political event. For millions of people, it was a return of hope. At that moment, Azerbaijan gained a leader capable of making decisions not based on emotions, but guided by the logic of historical responsibility.

One of the first crucial steps was achieving the ceasefire regime in May 1994. This hard-won respite saved the country from further exhaustion and allowed a transition from the struggle for survival to building the future. It was precisely then that a new philosophy of the state began to take shape - strong, self-reliant, and confident in its own capabilities.

The Foundation of Statehood

In a relatively short period, Heydar Aliyev managed to accomplish what not every statesman succeeds in doing: transforming a crisis-ridden territory into a stable state with clear strategic objectives.

The adoption of the 1995 Constitution became one of the key stages on this path. The fundamental law enshrined the principles of sovereignty, the rule of law, territorial integrity, and democratic development. But even more important was something else: society gained a sense of the state's solidity, an understanding that independence had ceased to be temporary and vulnerable.

State institutions were being established, an effective governance system was being formed, discipline and accountability were being strengthened. In fact, it was then that the very architecture of independence was laid, thanks to which Azerbaijan was able to weather numerous regional and global upheavals while maintaining stability and internal cohesion.

Economic Strategy and the "Contract of the Century"

True independence is impossible without a strong economy. Heydar Aliyev understood this better than anyone else. In 1994, amid the most severe crisis, when the country had not yet recovered from devastation and political instability, the legendary "Contract of the Century" was signed. This agreement became a true historical breakthrough. Azerbaijan did not merely attract investments. The country changed its own place on the world map. The foundations of an energy strategy were laid that transformed the republic into one of the most important actors in the international energy arena.

It was then that Azerbaijan's modern economic model began to take shape - open to the world, yet based on national interests and self-sufficiency.

International Authority and Historical Foresight

Heydar Aliyev possessed a rare political quality - the ability to combine firmness on matters of principle with flexibility and diplomatic finesse. Under the most complex geopolitical conditions, Azerbaijan managed to avoid dependence on external centers of power and build a multi-vector foreign policy. It was during this period that Azerbaijan's high international standing began to take shape.

The historical foresight of Heydar Aliyev was especially vividly demonstrated years later - in 2020, during the 44-day Patriotic War.

The liberation of Karabakh became not only a military Victory but also the triumph of the strategic course laid down by the national leader. It was Heydar Aliyev who initiated large-scale military development, formed the foundations of the modern Azerbaijani army, strengthened state discipline, and created the economic and political foundation for the future Victory.

When the Azerbaijani flag was raised once again over liberated Shusha, millions of people felt not only the joy of Victory but also a deep sense of historical justice. In this Victory, there was a continuation of the path begun by Heydar Aliyev.

The Path Continues

Today, Azerbaijan is confidently moving forward under the leadership of Ilham Aliyev - a worthy successor to the political course of the national leader.

The consistency, foresight, and firmness of state policy, large-scale infrastructure projects, the restoration of liberated territories, the growth of the country's international influence, the modernization of the economy, and the strengthening of sovereignty all attest to the fact that Heydar Aliyev's strategic line has not only been preserved but is successfully advancing.

Today, the cities of Karabakh are being revived, roads, airports, schools, and cultural centers are being built. Life is returning to the liberated lands. And in this great process of restoration, the continuity of the state strategy based on creation, responsibility, and love for the Homeland is felt with particular clarity.

A Vector of Strength

The birthday of Heydar Aliyev always becomes a moment of inner reflection. How worthily is the path that was begun being continued? How carefully is the statehood, for which such a high price was paid, being preserved? How strong are national unity and the sense of responsibility toward future generations?

The answer arises on its own when one looks at modern Azerbaijan - strong, independent, self-assured. And as long as the memory of Heydar Aliyev lives on in the hearts of Azerbaijanis, as long as gratitude for the saved statehood and the restored sense of national dignity endures, the course once set by the national leader will remain for Azerbaijan a vector of strength, development, and confidence in tomorrow.
