October 25 - Gubadly City Day
Today, Azerbaijan celebrates the Day of the City of Gubadly.
This holiday was established by a decree of President Ilham Aliyev dated July 31, 2023.
Gubadly was occupied by the armed forces of the Republic of Armenia (AF RA) on August 31, 1993.
During the years of occupation, the city and villages of the eponymous district were subjected to large-scale destruction; religious, historical, and cultural monuments, as well as cemeteries, were destroyed. The occupiers also caused serious damage to the unique natural environment, destroying rare species of trees and plants in the forests.
On October 25, 2020, during the 44-day Patriotic War, the victorious Azerbaijani army liberated Gubadly, raising the tricolor flag of Azerbaijan over these territories.
It should be noted that the Gubadly District was established in 1933 on the basis of the eponymous village. In 1963, it was abolished and merged with the Zangilan District, and in 1964, it once again became an independent unit.
Before the occupation by the AF RA on August 31, 1993, the administrative division of Gubadly included one city, 93 villages, and 31 administrative-territorial districts.
The terrain of the district is predominantly mountainous. The southwestern parts of the Karabakh Range (Mount Topagach - 2,010 m, Mount Pirdag - 1,316 m), the eastern part of the Bargushad Range (Mount Gartyz - 1,277 m), and the southern part of the Karabakh Highlands (Mount Gurbantepe - 1,075 m) are located within the district's territory.
Jurassic-Anthropogenic deposits are widespread across the district's territory. There is an agate deposit. Rivers include the Bazarchay, Hakari, and their tributaries — the Lesser Hakari, Meydanderesi, and others.
