Jeyhun Bayramov: Iranian drone attack on Nakhchivan causes serious concern
An extended meeting was held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov and the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Moldova Mihai Popșoi.
As reported by BAKU.WS, this was stated on the page of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Azerbaijan on the social network X.
The ministers discussed ways to continue and expand bilateral political dialogue, further develop cooperation in the areas of economy, energy, transport and the humanitarian sphere, as well as coordinate joint efforts within the framework of international organizations, including the United Nations and the OSCE.
The ministers also touched upon the unstable and tense security situation in the Middle East.
The head of Azerbaijan's MFA expressed serious concern over the drone attacks carried out by Iran on March 5, 2026, on the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan. As a result of these attacks, civilian infrastructure was damaged, including an airport and a school, and civilians were injured.
Jeyhun Bayramov also informed his Moldovan counterpart about the ongoing normalization and peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
As a reminder, on the afternoon of March 5, drone attacks were carried out from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. One of the drones struck the terminal building of Nakhchivan Airport, while another fell near a school building in the village of Shekerabad. The airport building sustained damage, and four people were injured as a result of the incident.
Azerbaijan's MFA strongly condemned the attack, stating that this assault on the territory of Azerbaijan contradicts the norms and principles of international law and contributes to the escalation of tensions in the region. The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Azerbaijan, Mojtaba Damirchilu, was summoned to the MFA. The Ministry of Defense placed full responsibility for the incident on the Islamic Republic of Iran, assuring that such acts of aggression would not go unanswered. A criminal case has been opened by the Prosecutor General's Office in connection with Iran's drone attack on civilian infrastructure in Nakhchivan.
