Azerbaijan and NATO discussed cooperation in the field of humanitarian demining.

BAKU.WS was informed about this by the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA).

The negotiations took place during a meeting between ANAMA Deputy Chairman of the Board Samir Poladov and a delegation led by the Head of NATO's Arms Control, Disarmament and WMD Non-Proliferation Section Eirini Lemos-Maniati.

The parties discussed the current cooperation, support from international partners, the implementation of a project on the application of innovative methods of humanitarian demining within the framework of the Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme, as well as Azerbaijan's participation in other ongoing and future projects of the programme.

Samir Poladov noted that mines hinder the return of former internally displaced persons to their native lands, slow down reconstruction efforts, and lead to serious humanitarian, economic, and environmental consequences.

He also briefed the NATO delegation on ANAMA's ongoing operations, the activities of the Training Center in Goygol, and the agency's international cooperation in the field of humanitarian demining.
