Today is the memorial day of the National Hero of Azerbaijan, for whose head the Armenians had put a bounty
Today is the memorial day of Albert Agarunov - a tank operator and National Hero of Azerbaijan.
As BAKU.WS reminds, he was born on April 25, 1969, in the Baku settlement of Surakhany. By nationality, he was a Mountain Jew.
When the first Karabakh war began, A. Agarunov volunteered for the front, as he believed that he was "fighting for the land where he was born." During combat operations in the direction of Khankendi, Dashalty, and Jamilli, he destroyed a significant amount of the enemy's manpower and armored vehicles. The Armenians were willing to pay a monetary reward for his head. Appointed as a tank commander, A. Agarunov was sent to Shusha.
Early in the morning of May 8, 1992, on the orders of unit commander A. Kasumov, he entered his final battle on the outskirts of the city. His crew knocked out two enemy tanks. While changing position, A. Agarunov noticed the bodies of fallen comrades on the ground. He climbed out of his combat vehicle to carry them away, and at that moment was struck down by a bullet from an Armenian sniper.
After his death, Azerbaijani tank crews named their combat vehicles "Albert."
By a Presidential Decree of June 7, 1992, Albert Agarunov was awarded the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan (posthumously). He is buried in the Alley of Martyrs in Baku.
Baku secondary school No. 154, from which Albert Agarunov graduated, bears his name. A hero's corner has been set up there, where fresh flowers are always placed, and all school events - rallies, assemblies, etc. - are held near the bust of the fighter.
In 2019, a monument to Albert Agarunov was erected in the Narimanov district.
