In Azerbaijan, more than 3 thousand people with thalassemia are officially registered
In Azerbaijan, 3,209 people have been officially registered with a diagnosis of thalassemia.
As reported by BAKU.WS, this was communicated by the National Center of Hematology and Transfusiology in response to a request from Report.
1,654 of them are men, 1,555 are women.
It is emphasized that thalassemia carriers are not subject to dispensary registration, as they are considered healthy individuals:
"Since 2015, screening for thalassemia has been conducted among individuals entering into marriage, and according to the screening results, the rate of this disease in Azerbaijan is approximately 4%."
It was also noted that currently about 300 thalassemia patients are on the waiting list for bone marrow transplantation:
"This year, bone marrow transplantation was performed on 14 patients at the National Center of Hematology and Transfusiology. Of these, 6 are patients diagnosed with thalassemia."
As a reminder, May 8 marks International Thalassemia Day.
