Ilham Aliyev and Mehriban Aliyeva signed an obituary in connection with the passing of Alexander Sharovsky

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva signed an obituary in connection with the passing of People's Artist Alexander Yakovlevich Sharovsky.

As reported by BAKU.WS, the obituary states:

"The cultural community of Azerbaijan has suffered a grievous loss. On September 9, 2026, in the 79th year of his life, the outstanding representative of Azerbaijani theatrical art, Chief Director of the Azerbaijan State Academic Russian Drama Theater named after Samad Vurgun, recipient of the personal pension of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, People's Artist Alexander Yakovlevich Sharovsky passed away.

Alexander Sharovsky was born on February 10, 1948, in the city of Baku. After completing secondary school, from 1968 to 1973 he received higher education at the Faculty of English Language and Literature of the Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages.

Having begun his professional career during his student years at the Azerbaijan State Theater for Young Audiences, Alexander Sharovsky dedicated his life to theatrical art. Starting from 1976, over the course of half a century, he worked at the Azerbaijan State Academic Russian Drama Theater named after Samad Vurgun as an actor, assistant director, and stage director, and from 1993 held the position of Chief Director.

As a master who skillfully combined classical theater traditions with contemporary trends in its development, Alexander Sharovsky made great contributions to the achievements of Azerbaijani performing arts. On the theatrical stage, he created characters distinguished by their naturalness. Thanks to his continuous creative exploration as a director, the numerous productions he staged based on outstanding examples of Azerbaijani and world dramatic heritage were distinguished by vivid stage solutions and were highly acclaimed in the theatrical community. These productions were successfully presented at prestigious theaters abroad as well, contributing to the promotion of Azerbaijani culture.

Alexander Sharovsky was also known for his extensive public activities. As a member of the Board of Trustees of the Baku International Center of Multiculturalism and the head of the Religious Community of European Jews of Baku, he made every effort to convey Azerbaijani realities to the world community and to preserve multicultural values in our country.

Alexander Sharovsky's contributions to the development of Azerbaijani culture were duly recognized by the state. He was awarded the honorary titles of "Honored Artist" (1987) and "People's Artist" (1998), and was decorated with high awards of the Republic of Azerbaijan — the orders "Shohrat" (2008), "Sharaf" (2018), and the "Honorary Diploma of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan" (2023).

The bright memory of the renowned master and public figure, the compassionate person Alexander Yakovlevich Sharovsky, will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
