Footage circulating on social media related to the composition of gold jewelry has sparked discussions. According to claims, it was discovered that out of a 44-gram gold item purchased by jewelers, more than 20 grams turned out to be copper.

As reported by Baku TV, according to jeweler Shamil Zeynalov, such cases occur not only when copper is added to the composition of gold, but also when other materials are used. He notes that some items are filled inside with various alloys and even wax to increase weight. The jeweler says that in one such case, he incurred a loss of 1,440 manats.

How possible is the presence of such an amount of copper in the composition of gold?

According to jeweler Shahin Alipanahov, this depends on the gold's hallmark. For example, in 585-hallmark gold, in addition to pure gold, copper and silver are also contained in a certain proportion. These additives are used to manufacture the item in accordance with the required hallmark.

Sh. Alipanahov notes that in Azerbaijan, gold items must bear a corresponding assay hallmark. Nevertheless, it is impossible to determine the authenticity of gold by appearance alone. Even specialists cannot accurately determine at first glance whether an item is counterfeit or not.
