A Picturesque Corner of Ismayilli District: A Forgotten Place in the Embrace of the Mountains
Baku TV channel prepared a report about the village of Akhan - one of the most ancient settlements of the Ismayilli district, located among dense forests surrounded by mountains.
The settlement, situated at an altitude of about 1,540 m above sea level and approximately 30 km from the city of Ismayilli, was once considered one of the wealthiest villages in the district.
Local residents say that the populations of Akhan and Lahij share common roots, but over time certain differences emerged in their dialects.
"Since there was no written language at the time and the villages were far from each other, differences in spoken language emerged over time. During the Soviet period, Akhan was one of the wealthiest villages. The main occupation of the residents was agriculture, with sheep farming being particularly widespread. In recent years, due to the outflow of young people, economic activity has declined. If there used to be 15,000-16,000 sheep here, now only about 3,000 head remain," the residents note.
Today, the main wish of the villagers remains the resolution of infrastructure problems. According to them, despite years of promises, the settlement still has not been supplied with gas.
"They tell us that gas will be brought to the village. For 7-8 years now, they have been coming, taking measurements, but the work has still not been completed. In addition, one of the most pressing problems for us remains the issue of roads," the local residents added.
