Hackers exploited a vulnerability in the software of Coldcard hardware cryptocurrency wallets, which were considered one of the most secure ways to store digital assets. As a result of the attack, which has been ongoing since late last week, the attackers managed to steal tens of millions of dollars in bitcoin.

This was reported by Bloomberg.

Due to a bug in the random number generator for seed phrases, the attackers were able to systematically calculate access keys and drain users' wallets. According to Galaxy Research, by Monday the damages had exceeded $86 million.

"It shows that crypto can't exist in an air-gapped manner. The device is only responsible for generating your passwords, and if the mathematical foundation is compromised, then your passwords can be reverse-engineered," said Aneurin Flynn, CEO of Failsafe, a company specializing in cybersecurity technologies.
