The US Congress has approved a defense budget project amounting to 901 billion dollars
The US Congress has approved the country's military budget for the fiscal year 2026 for a record amount of $901 billion.
As Report informs, the voting in the Senate - the upper chamber of the American legislative body - was broadcast by C-SPAN.
77 senators voted in favor of the bill, which was also approved by the lower House of Representatives of Congress on December 10, while 20 voted against. Thus, Congress supported the military budget project, which will now be sent to President Donald Trump for signature.
The military budget proposed earlier by lawmakers exceeds by $8 billion the proposal of the US President, who asked Congress to allocate $892.6 billion for military needs. This amount includes funding for both the Pentagon and other agencies and programs related to defense and security. Initially, the House of Representatives proposed an amount equivalent to the administration's request, while the Senate proposed increasing the military budget to $925 billion. Eventually, lawmakers reached a compromise.
The budget project provides, in particular, for the allocation of $400 million each for supporting Ukraine in 2026 and 2027. Additionally, the bill imposes an obligation on the Pentagon chief to report to the House of Representatives and the Senate about any temporary suspension or termination of providing intelligence data to Ukraine. The US military budget for the 2025 fiscal year, which ended on September 30, was $884 billion.
