Syrian President Ahmet Ashir calls on Bashar al-Assad's supporters to lay down arms
Damascus, Syria –
Syria's interim President Ahmet Ashir has called on armed supporters of former head of state Bashar al-Assad to lay down their arms. In his video address, published by the chancellery on the official Telegram channel, he warned of possible prosecution for those who do not comply.
Ashir assured that the state would remain the guarantor of civil peace and would not allow its violation. He also called on all armed formations participating in hostilities to fully submit to military command and security forces.
Casualties of clashes
The situation in Syria remains tense. According to Kurdish TV channel "Rudo", at least 134 people have died in combat clashes in Latakia and Tartus provinces, including 13 women and five children. Several security forces personnel subordinate to the new authorities also died in confrontations with Assad's armed supporters.
The head of security for Latakia province confirmed the information about the clashes in an interview with Al Jazeera, noting that security forces are taking active measures to stabilize the situation in the region.
Future of the country
The political situation in Syria remains unstable, but authorities declare their firm intention to restore order and guarantee citizens' security. The government is expected to take additional measures in the near future to resolve the conflict and restore control over the entire territory of the country.
