Scientists named the key factor of longevity
Adequate sleep duration may be closely linked to longevity. Moreover, this relationship turned out to be stronger than the influence of such factors as diet and physical activity. This conclusion was reached by scientists at Oregon Health & Science University. The results of the study were published in the journal Sleep Advances.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Sleep Advances, the researchers analyzed data from residents of various U.S. counties for the period 2019–2025. The scientists compared average life expectancy with the proportion of people who regularly slept less than seven hours per night.
It was found that in regions with a higher prevalence of sleep deprivation, life expectancy was on average lower. This association persisted even after accounting for levels of physical activity, dietary habits, education, employment, and other factors.
In terms of the strength of association with life expectancy, insufficient sleep was second only to smoking. After accounting for chronic diseases, obesity also proved to be a more significant factor.
The researchers emphasize that adequate sleep may be no less important for health and longevity than a balanced diet and regular physical activity. However, the study was observational in nature, so it does not prove a direct causal relationship between sleep deprivation and reduced life expectancy.
The authors recommend that adults aim for seven to nine hours of sleep per night.
