A New Ocean Has Begun Forming on Earth

East Africa is experiencing a rare geological phenomenon - a new ocean is beginning to form in the region. As reported by Zakon.kz, scientists are observing the process of continental crust splitting in the area of the Afar Depression.
This statement was made by Dr. Alexey Ivanov, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences and leading researcher at the Institute of Geology and Geochemistry of Ural Federal University. According to him, this is an extremely slow process: at the current rate of tectonic shifts, in 5-10 million years, the waters of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden may flood the lowland, separating the Horn of Africa from the rest of the continent.
As a result, a new ocean may appear where land once was, and the region may transform into an archipelago similar to Madagascar.
As noted by the publication Sterlegrad, deep cracks and surface subsidence are already being observed in this area, indicating the beginning of oceanic floor formation - a process that millions of years ago led to the formation of existing oceans.
