A dentist named an unobvious cause of stomach and intestinal problems

The condition of teeth and gums may be linked to disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. According to dentist Maksim Labukhin, certain oral diseases can negatively affect the functioning of the stomach and intestines.

As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to "Lenta.ru," malocclusion, cavities, and gum inflammation can become triggering factors for gastrointestinal problems. At the same time, the connection works in the opposite direction as well: gastritis, reflux, and peptic ulcer disease can negatively impact the condition of teeth.

M. Labukhin noted that cavities, pulpitis, and periodontitis are constant sources of infection. With insufficient hygiene, pathogenic microorganisms actively multiply in the oral cavity and can enter the gastrointestinal tract along with food.

According to the specialist, bacterial waste products can negatively affect the mucous membranes of the stomach and intestines, contributing to the development of inflammatory processes.

At the same time, increased stomach acidity, including in cases of gastritis and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), can damage tooth enamel. The acid softens and thins it, which increases tooth sensitivity to hot and cold and raises the risk of developing cavities.
