Interest in some medical specialties is declining: what is the reason?

Interest in some medical specialties in Azerbaijan is declining.
According to the State Statistics Committee, in 2024 there were 33,645 doctors of various specialties in the country. Among them are 7,981 therapists, 7,122 specialists in other fields, 3,634 dentists, 3,554 pediatricians, and 3,498 surgeons.
However, the number of doctors in some specialties is critically low. For example, there are only 212 phthisiologists (a doctor who studies, diagnoses, and treats tuberculosis - ed.), 67 narcologists, and only 57 sports medicine doctors for the entire country.
Medical expert Rasif Bagirov explains this situation by the fact that the specialties of phthisiologist, narcologist, and sports doctor are quite complex and associated with high health risks for the medical professionals themselves.
