In Azerbaijan, a romance with a 15-year-old schoolgirl ended with a prison sentence

In Shamkir, a man was brought to court for having relations with an underage girl and received a prison sentence.

As Qafqazinfo reports, criminal proceedings were initiated against Huseyn Ibrahimov (name and surname are fictional), born in 2001 and residing in one of the villages of the district. He is charged with violating Article 152 of the Criminal Code, which prohibits sexual relations with a person under 16 years of age.

The investigation established that Huseyn got married in 2020 and became a father of two children. After divorcing in early 2024, he met 15-year-old Zuleykha (conditional name) from Pirekeshkul settlement in Absheron district through social media. A relationship developed between them. On August 2, 2024, the schoolgirl, a 10th-grade student, quarreled with her mother and ran away from home, leaving a note: "Don't waste time looking for me, my beloved has taken me. You won't find me." After that, she made her way to Baku, hired a taxi, and went to Shamkir.

The next day, August 3, Zuleykha met with Huseyn and came to his home. There, he presented his children as his nephews, claiming he wasn't married. Later, the girl learned the truth but stayed and began helping to look after the children. Huseyn's relatives accepted the teenager as part of the family.

After Zuleykha's parents contacted the police, on August 10, her whereabouts were established, and she returned home.

Criminal proceedings were initiated against Huseyn for having relations with a minor. Recently, the Shamkir District Court sentenced him to 1 year and 9 months of imprisonment.
