Why is Saudi Arabia prohibiting the US from using its airspace?
The US was counting on support not only from NATO allies but also from the Persian Gulf countries. However, after a number of Western nations stated that the conflict surrounding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz "is not their war" and they did not intend to support President Donald Trump, Saudi Arabia also refused to participate in the American operation "Project Freedom," aimed at ensuring the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The reason, as noted, is similar to the position of Western countries: Washington did not notify Riyadh in advance of its steps related to Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.
According to NBC News, Saudi Arabian officials notified Washington that they would not allow American aircraft to take off from Prince Sultan Air Base and would also prohibit the use of the country's airspace.
It is reported that even a phone conversation between Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman did not help change the situation. After this, the American leader was forced to suspend operation "Project Freedom."
Why Saudi Arabia made this decision and what consequences it may lead to is covered in a report by Baku TV.
