Vardanyan's Dark Past: Why Did an American Writer Come to the Defense of an Odious Figure?
This time, the published letter caused a much greater resonance than yet another court verdict. For those who read it, a question arises directed at the author of the message - the world-renowned American economist and writer Nassim Nicholas Taleb.
The question is essentially simple: why does a man who dedicated his works to the study of risks himself come to the defense of such a controversial figure? Why does the author, who elevated uncertainty to the rank of a conceptual theory, turn a blind eye to facts from Ruben Vardanyan's past with such absolute certainty?
It is precisely around these questions that the open letter addressed to Taleb by Turkish engineer and researcher Ergün Kırlıkovalı is built.
The author of the letter emphasizes: the image of Vardanyan as a "philanthropist," carefully crafted over the years, is merely a facade. Behind it lie major financial scandals, geopolitical games, and legal accusations.
In reality, Ruben Vardanyan's name first surfaced not in the context of Karabakh at all. It appeared in international journalistic investigations many years earlier. In particular, the high-profile OCCRP investigation "Troika Laundromat" revealed complex financial schemes through which billions of dollars were funneled. These materials also mentioned the company "Troika Dialog," headed by Vardanyan. And although he himself denied these accusations, the case was never closed.
Then the Russian-Ukrainian conflict began, after which pressure on Russian oligarchs intensified, and it was precisely during this period that Vardanyan unexpectedly appeared in Karabakh. Was it a coincidence or a search for a new political refuge?
Answers to this question may vary across different countries, but one thing remains indisputable: he illegally entered the territory of Azerbaijan, assumed one of the highest "posts" in the separatist regime, and made statements that openly encroached upon Azerbaijan's sovereignty. During the period of peace negotiations, he became one of the key figures provoking the escalation of conflict in the region.
