Today is the birthday of the outstanding scholar, professor of literary studies, critic and translator Aida Imanguliyeva, who occupies a special place in the history of world Oriental studies.
As BAKU.WS reminds, she was born on October 10, 1939 in Baku into an intellectual family. Her father - journalist, educator, honored scientist Nasir Imanguliyev was one of the founders of Azerbaijani press, and for a long time worked as editor of the newspapers Bakı and "Baku".

In 1957, Aida Imanguliyeva graduated with a gold medal from secondary school No. 132 in Baku, which currently functions as an educational complex. From 1957-1962, Aida Imanguliyeva studied at the Arabic Philology Department of the Oriental Studies Faculty at Azerbaijan State University (now Baku State University), was a graduate student at the Department of Literary History of the Peoples of the Middle East at this institution, and also studied in graduate school at the Institute of Asian Peoples of the former USSR.
After defending her candidate dissertation in 1966, Aida Imanguliyeva began her career at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. Thanks to her talent and hard work, she progressed from junior researcher to department head, deputy director for scientific work, and finally, director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences.
In 1989, Aida Imanguliyeva defended her doctoral dissertation in Tbilisi and soon received the title of professor.
She is the author of three fundamental monographs ("The Pen Association and Mikhail Naimy", "Gibran Khalil Gibran", "Luminaries of Modern Arabic Literature") and more than 70 scientific articles, editor of many works on Eastern philology. She was chairman of the Council for Defense of Doctoral and Candidate Dissertations in the field of "Literature of Asian and African Countries", operating at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. Aida Imanguliyeva worthily represented Azerbaijani Oriental studies in the space of the former USSR and beyond its borders.

In her scientific-organizational activities, Aida Imanguliyeva paid great attention to training highly qualified Arabists. At the Arabic Philology Department she headed, more than 10 candidate dissertations were defended in a short period.
Being a member of the presidium of the All-Union Society of Orientalists, the All-Union Coordinating Council for the Study of Eastern Literatures, Aida Imanguliyeva for many years fruitfully conducted pedagogical activities, giving lectures on Arabic philology at Azerbaijan State University.
Professor Aida Imanguliyeva is the first Azerbaijani scholar to systematically study literary connections and the influence of East and West in Azerbaijan. Her numerous scientific works explore the synthesis of Western and Eastern cultural traditions, the development of creative style and the emergence of a new artistic style, which serves as a foundation for studying not only Arabic literature, but also contemporary Eastern literature as a whole.
The range of Aida Imanguliyeva's scientific interests was quite broad and multifaceted. However, the main object of her scientific research was Arabic literature. Aida Imanguliyeva masterfully translated into Azerbaijani language the stories of Mikhail Naimy, Mahmoud Az-Zahir, Mohammed Dib, Sahib Jamal, Suhayl Idris and other authors.
Her life companion was Arif Pashayev.
The renowned orientalist is the mother of First Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva and rector of the Baku branch of M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University Nargiz Pashayeva.
Aida Imanguliyeva passed away on September 19, 1992.
To perpetuate the memory of the renowned scholar Aida Imanguliyeva, the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Baku State University established a scholarship bearing her name, which is awarded to one of the top students of the faculty.
