IRENA highly praised Azerbaijan's leadership in the implementation of green energy projects

I highly appreciate Azerbaijan's leadership in striving to implement 2 GW green energy projects by 2027.

As Report informs, this was stated by Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), at the Baku Energy Week.

He added that our country plays an active role in IRENA's governance as a council member for 2026 and vice-president of the XVII IRENA Assembly in 2027. According to the Director-General, at COP29 in Baku, IRENA played a key role in launching the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Central Asia (APRECA).

"In cooperation with our friends from Türkiye, which will be the host country of the next COP31, we intend to build on the successes achieved in Azerbaijan. We want to advance the achievements realized in Baku under the leadership of COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev.

APRECA aims to advance the energy transition through increased investment, closer regional cooperation, and sustainable growth. We have received more than 1,600 projects for financing.

In concluding my remarks, I would like to note that last year, renewable energy capacity of 700 GW was created. This also means efficiency and capacity building. The electricity capacity we created in one year equals the total capacity created by nuclear energy over 70 years. Therefore, we must continue to scale it up further.

Over the past five years, 90% of electricity generated came from renewable sources. That is why the energy system is changing. The most important thing is that the competitiveness of future economies will directly depend on the capacity of energy systems and the ability of these mechanisms to provide industry with electricity at the lowest price. And this is impossible without renewable energy," emphasized Francesco La Camera.
