SOCAR will replace gas turbines on offshore installations with electric compressors

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) will replace gas turbines on offshore installations with electric compressors.

As Report informs, this was announced by SOCAR Vice President Afghan Isayev at the Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW 2026).

According to him, SOCAR has reached an agreement with the transmission system operator on a special energy exchange, which will enable the electrification of offshore installations. A new substation has been built for this purpose, and a ceremony for its first energization will take place next year.

After that, the offshore installations will be connected by cables, the gas turbines will be dismantled and replaced with electrical equipment, including electrically driven compressors.

Isayev noted that electric compressors are already manufactured by GE, Baker Hughes, and other companies. Such installations are also planned for use at central compressor stations.

He emphasized the importance of energy efficiency and noted that electrification should proceed in parallel with the development of renewable energy. SOCAR and its partners plan to create facilities capable of operating around the clock using renewable energy and battery energy storage systems.
