Food losses in Azerbaijan have dramatically decreased
In 2024, the volume of food losses in the country amounted to approximately 1.7% of the total volume of food produced. For comparison, in 2015 this figure was 2.7%.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Oxu.Az, compared to 2015, food losses in the country decreased by 8% in 2020, and by 40% in 2021. And in 2022-2024, the reduction level was 38%.
Note that the food loss index covers five main food groups - cereals and legumes, fruits and vegetables, root crops, tubers and oilseeds, animal products, as well as fish and fish products.
The food loss index is calculated according to a standard constant base index formula and is determined based on the ratio of the average percentage of food losses in the reporting year to the base year indicator. The calculations take into account the percentage of losses by products, the volume of production in the base year, and international average prices.
Food losses cover quantitative losses that occur during storage, transportation, and processing of products.
