The global average life expectancy has increased and reached the level that was recorded before the coronavirus pandemic.

This is stated in a report by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO assessed health trends across countries and regions for the period from 2000 to 2023, including trends in life expectancy, mortality and morbidity rates, as well as diseases.

"In 2023, the global life expectancy recovered to 73.3 years, approaching the pre-pandemic level, however, healthy life expectancy remains below 2019 figures," the organization's press release states.

Non-communicable diseases now account for 74% of all deaths worldwide, compared to 58% in 2000.

At the same time, mortality from dementia has tripled, and health losses associated with anxiety disorders and depression surged sharply after the onset of the pandemic.

In 2023, the ten leading causes of death accounted for 33 million out of 61 million deaths recorded worldwide. Non-communicable diseases made up eight of these ten leading causes.

Specifically, the leading causes of mortality were cardiovascular diseases, including ischemic heart disease and stroke, and respiratory diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lower respiratory tract infections, the WHO noted.
