The United States has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Iran.

The meeting was requested for today at 23:00 Moscow time (January 16, 00:00 Baku time - ed.).

Officially, the meeting has not yet been scheduled, said the agency's source. The decision to hold it must be confirmed by the Security Council chair from the presiding Somalia.

Recall that on December 29, 2025, protests by traders began in Tehran due to the sharp decline in the Iranian rial exchange rate. On the 30th, students joined the unrest. The disturbances spread to most major cities. On January 2, 2026, groups of unknown armed individuals appeared on the streets, and cases of armed clashes between rebels and law enforcement officers became more frequent.
