Ireland's new president Catherine Connolly officially assumed the duties of head of state on November 11.

As BAKU.WS reports with reference to Gazeta.ru, the inauguration was broadcast live by RTE television channel.

"In the presence of Almighty God, I, Catherine Connolly, solemnly and sincerely promise and declare that I will maintain and uphold the Constitution of Ireland, observe its laws, faithfully and conscientiously fulfill my duties," the politician said during the ceremony.

The inauguration was also attended by Ireland's Prime Minister Micheál Martin and other cabinet members, as well as representatives of the opposition and judges.

The presidential election was held in Ireland in October. Despite the fact that the Fine Gael party is part of the ruling coalition in Ireland, their candidate Heather Humphreys could not overtake Connolly in this election.

Connolly said that she was very happy, speaking to voters after the preliminary vote count.
