Asteroid YR4 is flying towards Earth — tsunamis and catastrophe possible

May 3, 2025 - Astronomers have intensified observation of asteroid 2024 YR4, after the probability of its collision with Earth in the coming years has increased. According to updated data, the cosmic body may approach our planet in 2032, and although the chance of impact remains low, the possible consequences are forcing scientists to keep the object under constant monitoring.

Discovered in 2024, asteroid YR4 belongs to the class of near-Earth objects. On the Turin scale, used to assess threats from celestial bodies, its potential danger is rated at 3 out of 10. This means an "attention-requiring" level, where local destruction is possible in case of impact.

According to specialists' estimates, if it falls on land, YR4 is capable of releasing energy tens of times greater than the power of the Chelyabinsk meteorite. And if it falls into the ocean, it could trigger giant tsunamis and destruction of coastal territories.

However, astronomers emphasize that it's too early to talk about a real threat. In 2028, the asteroid will fly closer to Earth, and it is then that the parameters of its orbit can be calculated with greater accuracy.

Currently, observation of YR4 is being conducted by several observatories around the world. Scientists assure that even in the case of increased threat, humanity will have time to assess the risk and, if necessary, take measures.
