The active components of ginseng may improve the condition of gut microflora, reduce inflammation, and positively influence brain function. This conclusion was reached by scientists from Jilin Agricultural University. The results of the study were published in the journal Nutrients.

The scientists focused on studying ginsenosides, polysaccharides, and other biologically active substances found in ginseng. The analysis showed that these compounds are capable of altering the composition of gut microflora, strengthening the intestinal barrier function, and reducing inflammation.

Of particular interest to the researchers was the effect of ginseng on the "gut-brain" axis — a complex system of interaction between the digestive and nervous systems. It is known that gut bacteria are involved in the production of neurotransmitters, regulate immune responses, and can influence cognitive functions, mood, and the risk of developing neurological diseases.

According to the review data, the active substances in ginseng are capable of affecting several links in this system simultaneously. In animal experiments, they reduced damage to the intestinal mucosa, stimulated the growth of beneficial microorganisms, and suppressed inflammatory processes associated with the development of inflammatory bowel diseases.

In addition, positive effects were observed in models of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, depression, obesity, and diabetes. In many cases, improvement in gut condition was accompanied by changes in brain function and metabolism.

The authors of the study note that one of the possible mechanisms of ginseng's action is the reduction of chronic inflammation levels. It is believed that inflammatory processes in the gut can affect the central nervous system through immune signals, hormones, and metabolic byproducts of the microbiota.

Despite the encouraging results, the researchers emphasize that most of the available data has been obtained in laboratory experiments and animal studies. To confirm the effectiveness of ginseng in humans, large-scale clinical trials are needed to help determine optimal dosages and assess the long-term safety of this approach.
