Today, the National Hero of Azerbaijan, martyr of the Karabakh War, Allahverdi Bagirov, would have turned 79 years old.

A. Bagirov was born in Aghdam on April 22, 1946.

In 1965, he graduated from secondary school No. 1 in Aghdam, after which he became seriously interested in sports and subsequently became a well-known footballer in Aghdam. He was the head coach of the Aghdam football club "Karabakh".

Allahverdi Bagirov joined the People's Movement in 1988 from the first days of the Karabakh conflict and became one of its most active figures.

After the events of "Black January" in 1990, Allahverdi organized a volunteer battalion in Aghdam, whose fighters took part in the defense of several villages in the Aghdam region.

In October 1991, under the command of Allahverdi Bagirov and his brother Eldar, military units of the National Army of Azerbaijan were formed in Aghdam. Eldar Bagirov was appointed commander of the Aghdam territorial self-defense battalion No. 845. The battalion of 760 people was named "Sons of the Fatherland".

Deputy of the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan Eldar Bagirov, who signed the act "On State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan" in the same year, was mysteriously killed in front of his sister's house in the 4th microdistrict of Baku when returning from a meeting of the Supreme Council. After the death of Eldar Bagirov, the battalion was named after him, and his brother Allahverdi became the battalion commander.

In January 1992, the battalion, which consisted of 150 soldiers, under the command of Allahverdi Bagirov overcame the resistance of enemy forces in the village of Nakhchivanly and even managed to reach the Askeran fortress and occupy all the heights of the village of Pirjamal. Bagirov's battalion also established a position opposite the village of Kyatuk. For the heroism that Allahverdi showed during this two-hour operation, he was awarded the General Muhammad Asadov prize.

During the Khojaly genocide, Allahverdi Bagirov's battalion near Askeran managed to save hundreds of city residents. He made a great contribution to the removal of the bodies of those killed during the Khojaly genocide from the battlefield and the release of Azerbaijani prisoners in exchange for bodies and captured Armenian servicemen. Allahverdi Bagirov saved 1,003 residents of Khojaly from captivity in three days.

One of his military successes was the battle for the village of Aranzamin on June 12, 1992, when Bagirov's detachment destroyed 100 and captured 10 enemy soldiers.

Two days after this operation, on June 14, Allahverdi Bagirov's car, who was urgently called to Aghdam, hit a mine on the way from Nakhchivanly.

By the decree of the President of Azerbaijan dated February 24, 1993, A. Bagirov was posthumously awarded the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan, and in 1998, by the decree of national leader Heydar Aliyev, he was awarded the "Gold Star" medal.

It should be noted that after the liberation of Aghdam from Armenian occupation, the daughters of the National Hero visited his grave 27 years after his death.
