Vučić: Agreement with Azerbaijan on gas power plant expected within a month
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić expressed hope that an agreement with Azerbaijan on the construction of a gas-fired power plant would be signed within a month, noting Baku's key role in ensuring Europe's energy security.
As reported by BAKU.WS, the Serbian leader made this statement in response to a question from Report's Balkan bureau following a National Security Council session dedicated to the energy situation.
According to him, in this case, Azerbaijan's role in Europe's energy security will increase even further.
"Of course, friendly relations at a high level exist between Serbia and Azerbaijan, and we are on the verge of signing a major agreement on a gas-fired power plant of enormous importance to our country. We hope this will happen very soon - within a month," he stated.
The president emphasized that Serbia highly values the role of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in energy matters. "His contribution is viewed as stabilizing and extremely important," he stressed.
Vučić also noted that the implementation of the project would open a new chapter in bilateral cooperation.
It should be recalled that in February 2026, during the visit of the Azerbaijani president to Serbia, an intergovernmental agreement was signed on the design, construction, and management of a gas turbine power plant. The document was signed by Azerbaijan's Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov and Serbia's Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović.
At a joint press conference with Ilham Aliyev in Belgrade, Vučić stated that the parties intended to finalize the draft agreement within 2–3 months, after which construction would begin and last more than two years. The 500 MW power plant is expected to be commissioned by 2029. Three sites in the area of the city of Niš are being considered as possible locations.
