Today, June 12, is the day of remembrance of the National Hero of Azerbaijan, a symbol of Karabakh resistance and martyr of the Karabakh War, Allahverdi Bagirov, who created and led the first self-defense units to protect Azerbaijani lands from Armenian aggression.
As BAKU.WS reminds, A. Bagirov was born on April 22, 1946, in the city of Agdam.

A. Bagirov joined the People's Movement in 1988, from the first days of the Karabakh conflict, and became one of its most active figures. After the events of "Black January" in 1990, he organized a volunteer battalion in Agdam, whose fighters took part in the defense of several local villages.
In October 1991, under the command of A. Bagirov and his brother Eldar, military units of the National Army of Azerbaijan were formed in Agdam.
Eldar Bagirov was appointed commander of the Agdam territorial self-defense battalion No. 845. The unit of 760 people was named "Sons of the Fatherland".
Deputy of the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan Republic E. Bagirov, one of those who signed the act "On State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan" in the same year, was killed in front of his sister's house in the 4th microdistrict of Baku when returning from a parliament session. After E. Bagirov's death, the battalion was named after him, and his brother Allahverdi became the unit commander.
In January 1992, a battalion consisting of 150 fighters, under the command of A. Bagirov, overcoming the resistance of enemy forces in the village of Nakhchivanly, was able to reach the Askeran fortress and occupy all the heights near the village of Pirjamal. In addition, Azerbaijani military established a post opposite the village of Kyatuk. For the heroism shown during this two-hour operation, A. Bagirov was awarded the General Muhammad Asadov prize.
During the Khojaly genocide, A. Bagirov's battalion managed to save hundreds of residents of the city of Khojaly near Askeran. He made a great contribution to the removal of the bodies of those killed in this massacre from the scene of the tragedy and the release of Azerbaijani prisoners in exchange for bodies and captured Armenian militants. Thus, A. Bagirov freed 1,003 Khojaly residents from captivity in three days.
One of his military successes was the battle for the village of Aranzamin in June 1992, when A. Bagirov's detachment destroyed 100 and captured 10 enemy soldiers. Two days after this operation, on June 12, A. Bagirov's car, who was urgently called to Agdam, hit a mine on the way from Nakhchivanly.
By the decree of the President of Azerbaijan Republic dated February 24, 1993, A. Bagirov was posthumously awarded the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan, and in 1998, by the decree of national leader Heydar Aliyev - the "Gold Star" medal.
It should be noted that after the liberation of Agdam from Armenian occupation, the daughters of the National Hero visited their father's grave 27 years after his death.
