Today Azerbaijan celebrates the Day of the city of Agdam
November 20 is celebrated as the Day of Agdam City in Azerbaijan.
BAKU.WS reminds that this significant date was established by the decree of President Ilham Aliyev on July 31, 2023, and is associated with the liberation of Agdam city from Armenian occupation.
Exactly five years ago, on November 20, 2020, Agdam was cleared of Armenian invaders as a result of Azerbaijan's brilliant victory in the second Karabakh war. The city returned under Azerbaijan's control without a single shot being fired, according to the Trilateral statement of November 10.
Agdam, located in the center of Karabakh, was occupied by Armenian armed formations on July 23, 1993. 77.4% of the district's territory, including the city and 80 villages, fell under Armenian control. In the occupied area, 26 out of 38 collective and state farms, 105 out of 129 healthcare facilities, 74 out of 108 schools, 199 out of 271 cultural centers, 24 construction organizations, 67 institutions and enterprises, and 14 out of 17 mosques came under occupation. All buildings, historical, cultural, religious, and national monuments of Azerbaijan on the occupied lands were destroyed or ruined.
Agdam lost 6,000 martyrs in battles with the enemy, 16 of them are National Heroes of Azerbaijan.
On September 27, 2020, the Azerbaijani army launched large-scale counter-offensive operations to liberate the ancestral lands of our country. During military operations, territories that had been under occupation for many years were liberated by the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan village by village, inch by inch.
On the 44th day of our just struggle, on the night of November 9-10, the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, and the President of Russia Vladimir Putin signed a Statement on complete ceasefire and cessation of all military operations in the conflict zone. One of the document's points concerned the complete withdrawal of occupying forces from Agdam by November 20.
On November 23, 2020, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ilham Aliyev and First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva visited the city of Agdam liberated from occupation.
Ilham Aliyev raised the tricolor flag of Azerbaijan in the center of Agdam.
Currently, restoration work is underway in Agdam, new infrastructure is being created, and the city is being reborn. Now the city being restored awaits its original inhabitants - the people of Agdam.
