Ilham Aliyev received the newly appointed UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan
On September 2, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received the newly appointed United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Dmitry Shlapachenko.
As reported by AZERTAC, Dmitry Shlapachenko presented his credentials to the head of state.
Touching upon the relations between our country and the UN, President Ilham Aliyev emphasized that such large-scale UN events as COP29 and the World Urban Forum were held in Azerbaijan, and stated that this year the Forum on Intercultural Dialogue will also be organized jointly with the UN Alliance of Civilizations.
Emphasizing that Azerbaijan is an important partner of the UN and, as a middle power, hosts prestigious events of this organization, Dmitry Shlapachenko in this context recalled that COP and the World Urban Forum were organized in Baku. Noting that the 4th International Conference on Mine Action on the topic "Humanitarian Demining for Urban Recovery: Setting Best Practice Standards for Ensuring the Safety of Populated Areas" is being held in Baku today, he said that the UN Climate Week will also take place in our country.
Dmitry Shlapachenko highly appreciated the support provided by Azerbaijan to the activities of the relevant UN structures.
He said that the UN is also ready to support with its expertise the development program currently being implemented by Azerbaijan, and in this regard touched upon the importance of the large-scale work being carried out in post-conflict conditions in Karabakh and East Zangazur.
Noting the mine problem, Dmitry Shlapachenko said that the UN is ready to support Azerbaijan on this issue and share its experience.
The head of our state also spoke about the large-scale construction and restoration work being carried out in the territories liberated from occupation, and noted the scale of the mine problem that our country faces. President Ilham Aliyev emphasized that despite the fact that this hinders construction and restoration work, Azerbaijan continues its consistent activities in the field of demining.
Dmitry Shlapachenko announced that he would visit Karabakh in the near future. He noted that a major event related to UN Day is planned at Karabakh University.
The meeting also discussed environmental issues related to improving the ecological situation on transboundary rivers in the South Caucasus region, conducting monitoring in this area, and the shallowing of the Caspian Sea.
