Today, November 9, the Day of the National Flag is celebrated in Azerbaijan.
BAKU.WS reminds that this holiday was established by a decree of President Ilham Aliyev dated November 17, 2009, and officially approved by the Milli Majlis on December 4 of the same year.
The national flag of Azerbaijan was adopted at a session of the government of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) on November 9, 1918.
After the fall of the republic in April 1920, the tricolor flag was lowered, but 70 years later, on November 17, 1990, on the initiative and under the leadership of the Chairman of the Supreme Majlis of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Heydar Aliyev, the flag was raised again in Nakhchivan.
On February 5, 1991, by a decision of the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan, this flag was adopted as the national flag. And on October 18, 1991, by the Constitutional Act "On the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan," Azerbaijan, as the successor of the ADR, restored its state symbols, including the flag.
The national flag of Azerbaijan consists of three horizontal stripes of equal width. The upper stripe is blue, the middle one is red, and the lower one is green. The blue color represents the Turkic origin of the Azerbaijani people, the red symbolizes the aspiration to build a modern society and develop democracy, and the green represents belonging to Islamic civilization. In the center of the red stripe, on both sides of the flag, a white crescent and an eight-pointed star are depicted.
The Day of the National Flag is included in the list of non-working holidays in the country.
