First Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva got acquainted with the restoration work carried out in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican

On October 17, First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva familiarized herself with the restoration works carried out in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

As BAKU.WS reports, the Archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, informed First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva about the cathedral and the restoration works carried out there.

It was noted that St. Peter's Basilica, which is the largest church in the world, is considered the religious center of the Catholic world and one of the four papal basilicas of the Vatican. It is also one of the most magnificent architectural structures in the world. Although the cathedral was founded in the 4th century, the current building dates back to the 16th-17th centuries.

It was emphasized that the Pope is considered the rector of the cathedral, and its management is entrusted to a cardinal appointed by the pontiff. This cardinal also has the status of Archpriest of the Vatican City State. Since February 20, 2021, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, of Italian origin, has been the Archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica.

On February 28, 2019, an agreement was signed between the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and St. Peter's Basilica for the restoration of the bas-relief "The Meeting of Pope Leo I with Attila, Emperor of the Huns" located in the cathedral and the mausoleum of Tullius Zetus in the basilica's necropolis. The restoration work on the project has been completed.

The Archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, expressed deep gratitude to First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva for carrying out the restoration works in the cathedral at a high level and in a short time.
