Azerbaijan Celebrates National Flag Day
Today, November 9, Azerbaijan celebrates National Flag Day.
BAKU.WS reminds that this holiday was established by a decree of President Ilham Aliyev on November 17, 2009, and officially approved by the Milli Mejlis on December 4 of the same year.
The national flag of Azerbaijan was adopted at a meeting of the government of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) on November 9, 1918.
Azerbaijan celebrates National Flag Day
After the fall of the republic in April 1920, the tricolor flag was lowered, but 70 years later, on November 17, 1990, on the initiative and under the leadership of the chairman of the Supreme Mejlis of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Heydar Aliyev, the flag was raised again in Nakhchivan.
On February 5, 1991, by decision of the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan, this flag was adopted as the state flag. And on October 18, 1991, by the Constitutional Act "On State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan," Azerbaijan, as the successor of the ADR, restored its state symbols, including the flag.
Azerbaijan celebrates National Flag Day
The national flag of Azerbaijan consists of three horizontal stripes of equal width. The upper stripe is blue, the middle one is red, and the lower one is green. The blue color represents the Turkic origin of the Azerbaijani people, red signifies the aspiration to build a modern society and develop democracy, and green represents belonging to Islamic civilization. In the center of the red stripe, on both sides of the flag, a white crescent and an eight-pointed star are depicted.
National Flag Day is included in the list of non-working holidays in the country.
