People suffering from insomnia may have a 26% higher risk of stroke compared to those who do not experience sleep disorders. This conclusion was reached by researchers at the European Academy of Neurology. The results of the study were published in the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews (SMR).

As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to "Gazeta.Ru," scientists analyzed the results of studies on the effects of insomnia on health. Nine studies examined the link between insomnia and stroke, and the systematic review as a whole covered data from more than 1.3 million people.

According to the data obtained, the presence of insomnia is associated with a 26% increase in the risk of stroke. In addition, people with this sleep disorder had a 28% higher probability of hospitalization for any reason.

Researchers also identified a link between insomnia and other brain health disorders. The sleep disorder was associated with depression and suicidal behavior, and available data suggest a possible increased risk of dementia. The most consistent association was found with Alzheimer's disease.

The study authors note that insomnia should be considered not only as a sleep problem but also as a possible indicator of brain condition and overall health. At the same time, the scientists emphasize that the study identified a statistical association but does not prove that insomnia directly causes stroke or dementia.
